In class today, I asked you to record one thing about another person's approach/comments that you found particularly interesting or that changed the way you thought about the play or the text. First, in one sentence, please share that insight and who addressed it. Secondly, in one sentence, please share how you yourself might do one thing better that would make tomorrow's critical discussion even better. Thanks and happy writing.
In general, I have a habit of commenting a lot during discussions. I was commenting a lot in the beginning, but then I transitioned to not commenting at all once I realized how much I had been talking. I should work to comment less, but comment consistently throughout the class.
ReplyDelete1. There was a combination of Anjeli, Sri, and Nishant talking about the morality of a soldier killing.
ReplyDelete2. I think I could build more on other people's comments rather than come up with new ideas all the time.
Adam's comment about how Macbeth is gradually justifying murder and separating himself from the murders because of this shifted my previous views of why Macbeth was no longer killing people himself. Tomorrow, I am going to contribute more to the discussion and make sure to cite the text.
ReplyDeleteCaroline's comment on Macbeth being Lady Macbeth's soldier definitely changed my view of thinking about Macbeth. This is because you always know that Macbeth is the protagonist, he is supposed to be a hero, and you read a LOT about him. Lady Macbeth is less pronounced, and since Macbeth is the protagonist, Macbeth's character subtly has a bit more dominance and seems like the overall controller at the end, but Caroline's comment made me think that it definitely could be the other way around. That Lady Macbeth could actually be the controller of things, using Macbeth to her advantage. I think I could definitely talk more tomorrow and add more input to the conversation.
ReplyDeleteI agreed with Laurel's point when she said that Macbeth may have chosen not to have killed Banquo himself because he still had feelings of guilt. She went on to explain that Macbeth showed signs of remorse feelings from when he felt that he could not return the daggers to Duncan's chamber after killing him, all the way up to when he is explaining the murder steps to the three murderers. In class, I think that I need to participate more by talking regularly and by including my thoughts of the topic into the conversation.
ReplyDelete1. During class, Sri mentioned the fact that the witches might also be the driving force of the play. I agree with her because to me, they are sort of like a guide to Macbeth's life. Whatever they say actually happens, or the characters make it happen.
ReplyDelete2. In order to make help our class discussion tomorrow, I should participate more, cite more passages, and try to agree or disagree with the others' responses, and addressing them directly.
1. Carolines comment about Lady Macbeth having more control over Macbeth is something that i don't totally agree with, but think was very interesting.
ReplyDelete2. I will keep my comments more on topic
1. I found the parallel that Caroline made about how Macbeth seemed to be a soldier for Lady Macbeth was very interesting and it made me think of morality in the play on a deeper level.
ReplyDelete2. In the future I should try to make sure that I know exactly what I want to say before I talk and go on off-subject tangents.
1. Caroline's comment about looking at Macbeth subjectively and not automatically assuming he is good unless given proof really made me think about where he stands on morality.
ReplyDelete2. In the future I need to jump in to the conversation more. I had some points today but was too hesitant to jump in in fear of interrupting someone.
I thought Sarah-Grace's comment about how Macbeth may be more ambitious that we think he is and it is hidden by Lady Macbeth's more obvious ambition was interesting. I think I need to get better at inserting ideas and questions of my own into discussions of other people's ideas so I don't talk a lot on one subject and then go completely silent.
ReplyDeleteAdam and Andrew’s observations about Macbeth being able to delegate the task of the murder of Banquo meaning that Macbeth didn’t feel as bad about the murder was very insightful. I think I could do better in the discussion tomorrow by citing the text more often.
ReplyDeleteI thought the idea that the witches only bring to the surface feelings and ideas that were already present in characters was interesting. Tomorrow, I will actually be a part of the discussion because I won't be the Point Person!
ReplyDeleteI found Laurel's comment about how the witches bring out certain things from characters, like power-hunger from Macbeth, was very insightful and changed my perspective regarding the activeness of the Witches. Tomorrow, I hope to be able to stick more closely to the text and to participate consistently throughout the discussion - I found myself going somewhat in and out of paying full attention and will be sure to work on this tomorrow.
ReplyDelete1. Sarina's question about how fate may be controlling Macbeth, as well as Anjeli's comment on how Macbeth may be using the prophecy to justify his actions.
ReplyDelete2. I tend to not speak up so i should speak up and talk clearly.
Tyler Russell
ReplyDeleteSo the comment that really changed my perspective was made by Adam about how Macbeth having other people to kill Banquo made him more malevolent because it shows that he justifies killing Banquo. Something that I had trouble with was making sure that I was contributing enough to the conversation which I will be sure to do tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteI chose Niko's comment pertaining to how Macbeth became more accustomed to murder as the play went on. He stated that because Macbeth gains the title of king, he now does not have to worry as much about being challenged in murder, resulting in him being less apprehensive to murder. This also results in Macbeth not having to deal with fear and guilt following the murder of Banquo. In order to get better during discussions, I think I have to organize my notes better so that they will be more easily presented.
ReplyDelete1. I thought that Sri's point about the Witches being the central force in Macbeth was really good and straight to the point.
ReplyDelete2. I need to contribute more and use quotes from the text to support my thoughts, usually I just say something without having any evidence to support my answer.
I found Nico's comment about how the witches are controlling Macbeth even more than initially thought due to their conjuration of ghosts along with other things was interesting. If I was there tomorrow, I would try to think outside of the box and try to elaborate on opinions that at first may not seem like a "normal" opinion.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Sri's comment about how the witches were controlling everything was a good point and something to be considered. I should use more text citations in my comments.
ReplyDeleteThe insight was made by Angeli and her insight was that Macbeth would have killed Duncan if the witches didn't come into play. One thing I should do better is talk more because I listen more than I talk ;and write down my thoughts and end up not saying them at all. I also need to become more articulate, sometimes things make sense in my head but then comes out like gibberish- I connect the dots but it's hard for me to show the full picture.
ReplyDeleteI also thought that Angeli's comment about how Macbeth would have killed Duncan without the witches prophecy to be very interesting. To improve my contribution to the class discussion, I will try to look further into the text to try and think about the certain passage in a different light that I usually would.
ReplyDelete1. I thought that Brandon's comment about how Macbeth sent people out to kill his victims was because he was not mentally capable was very interesting.
ReplyDelete2. To do better in the discussion, I will try to speak up more often and make my thoughts clearer.
The comment Caroline made about how Macbeth was a being "solder" when he was killing Duncan, because I always thought that Macbeth was being selfish. In the next discussion, I should be more engaged in the conversation and cite the text more.
